The Ghost of Olga and Misha lives on Downunder.
Olga White and Misha Mouratov have always been generous
in their support of our Dragon sailing in Australia. They
brought their boats out for the Prince Philip Cup in Sydney
3 years ago and participated in our Easter pre-Worlds regatta
in Melbourne and then again at the Melbourne Worlds. The sight
of their two bright yellow spinnakers with the the “Murka”
(Russian for cat) logo, near the head of the fleet became
a familiar sight on our waters. These bright yellow spinnakers
have proliferated since then with their generous donation
of used spinnakers to our up and coming fleet members.
But not until last weekend (18-20th May) did the Ghost of
Olga and Misha return. Wolf Breit brought to Sydney their
two Moscow boats which arrived 3 days before our Winter Championships
on Botany Bay (close to Sydney’s International Airport
south of the city). Matt Whitnall, one of Australia’s
top one design sailors chartered Murka 9 and under the sail
of RUS 99 won the overall regatta. Murka 3 came fourth skippered
by Ray Chatfield and crew from WA.
We miss Olga and Misha – but their legacy in Australia
