Dragon Fleet development in Abersoch
A
great revival of a traditional Dragon fleet is underway in
Abersoch, North Wales. Traditionally a key Dragon sailing
venue with a once substantial and well supported fleet, the
fleet diminished for a range or reasons in the earlier 1980's.
A group of enthusiastic Dragon sailors is currently reviving
the fleet, with circa 5 boats already bought, the aim is to
have between six and eight boats sailing by the start of the
2009 season. Many of the owners have sons & daughters
aged 14 - 18 years, the kids know each other, and the aim
is to get them involved.
The “fleet rule” for the start up period is a
cap on spending at £15,000, GRP hulls recommended, in
order to get the fleet off the ground.
Abersoch provides a great championship venue with a fabulous
club - South Caernarfonshire Yacht Club, stunning beaches
and Snowdonia National Park close by.
The local contact for details of the fleet activity is the
Chester based Rob Riddell, mobile 07738 916013. email rob.riddell@hotmail.co.uk
Rob says 'interest and support from Abersoch SCYC sailors
has been strong - the numbers immediately buying is proof
of the support in getting the Dragon class up and running'.
